I'm addicted

The reason I've been away from Xanga for so long is because I'm hooked on the
Traveler IQ Challenge.

I do better with the Eastern Hemisphere than I do with Canada. I'd be better at Canadian geography if I watched more hockey.

Hello, again.

The past few months have been tough but good.  I took Friday off and ran some errands.  Afterwards, Wifey and I went to Manassas Battlefield for our Civil War fix.

Yesterday, I watched the Darjeeling Limited.  It was a movie that I felt like I needed to watch because it was Wes Anderson's latest, but had no burning desire to see it.  It wasn't bad, but just not as good as his first three movies.  I think the missing element this time (like the Life Aquatic), was the writing of Owen Wilson.  I can't put my finger on it, but Anderson's humor/sensibility isn't made complete unless he has Wilson writing alongside him.

Wifey and I decided not to get cable.  We have been watching tv on an early '90s Sony.  We get four channels.  Only one of them clearly.  But we like sifting through the static.  "Hey, is this broadcast in hi def?" We thought we could make better use of our time if we didn't watch as much tv.

But we did join the YMCA.  We haven't worked out in months. Our motivation for working out was to take advantage of the cable tv provided in front of the life cycles.

Lake Effect

photos from a recent weekend at Deep Creek Lake.  1st time away in months.

Because of digital cameras, a forgotten joy nowadays is guessing what was on the last roll of film one just shot.  I am terrible about recording dates and notes on rolls of film. So everytime I process these unmarked rolls, it's a surprise.

The following were from a more care free summer, last year.

yet another shallow entry: recent purchases and acquisitions

It's been a rough couple of months.  Rather than bore you with the details, I'll fill the latest entry with some fluff by updating you on the recent stuff I've bought or had given to me.

For our 1st year anniversary presents, Sara and I gave each other Louisville Sluggers.  We have a Little League field across the street from our house.  You can smack home runs over the junior fence.  It's great for your self esteem.  We also find extra baseballs in the area behind the fence.  We always come out ahead.

My first ever digital camera is the Canon G7.  I've resigned myself to the fact that I will never find the perfect camera.  Not yet.  The Leica M8 is a nice one.  But it costs $5000.  The digital SLR's, like the Nikon D200, are nice, but they're big, honkin' cameras to sling around your neck. Since this purchase was necessary for my work in documenting cases, I couldn't wait any longer.  It's not a bad camera.  It's got a rugged, little body.  Manual knobs. Viewfinder.  Hotshoe.  10MP. The only thing is that it doesn't record RAW files and I wish it had a larger aperture.  But it takes nice pictures.

One of our cars was totalled.  (Don't worry, no one was hurt).  We were very, very busy when this happened.  So we bought a 2007 Suburu Outback in 2 days.  It's kid ready, just in case we want to have kids someday.  Don't read too much into this.  We aren't planning on having kids any time soon. We just plan to keep this car for 15-20 years and drive it into the ground.  It's also All Wheel Drive.  So when it snows, and Sara has to go to work, I don't have to push.

My friend, Mark, gave me this cuckoo clock as an office warming present.  It's made in Germany and has a very tiny little cuckoo bird. Once I get my office remodeled, the clock's going in.

I told a patient of mine that I was learing biblical Greek and Hebrew.  A few weeks later, his wife came into the office with two grocery bags worth of books including this 4 volume set Interlinear Bible.  I thought they were loaners, but she said they're for me to keep!  Not only does it have the Greek and Hebrew side by side with the English text, but it also coded with Strong's Concordance Numbers.

Who's Your Favorite Chili Pepper?

Remember the Red Hot Chili Peppers during high school?

Anthony Kiedis and John Frusciante during the early days (1991).

When I went away to college I kind of forgot about them. Frusciante left the band in 1992, fell into depression, got hooked on heroin and rotted his teeth out. It was such a heart breaking story because he was such a talented musician.

Frusciante (1994 or 1995)

Anyway, he eventually cleaned up, got a set of dentures and got back into music. It wasn't until John Frusciante rejoined the band in 1998 that I took interest in the Chili Peppers again. I found this interview of him on YouTube where he talks about how he got off drugs. It was such a good story that it made me smile. (2 minutes into it)

Frusciante nowadays
